The Harmful Cultural Traditions Performed on Women in Africa
MocoMUN SOCHUM Committee
Thomas Wootton MUN
Hello and welcome to MocoMUN 2015!
My name is Kate Garmer and I will be your chair alongside Alina Gaynutdinova. We are both extremely honored to be your chairs at the second annual MocoMUN. I am a junior at Wootton High School and a Vice President of our Model UN club. When I’m not doing MUN, I’m most likely doing AP Chemistry homework or playing soccer. I enjoy participating in school shows by constructing the sets and spend my weekends taking care of my numerous plants.
SOCHUM is the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural committee of the General Assembly. It is commonly referred to as the “Third Committee”. It is primarily concerned with promoting ideas of world peace, human rights, and cultural development. SOCHUM also discusses issues pertaining to women’s rights, treatment of refugees, and social development issues involving the elderly, children, and people with disabilities.
This committee session, you all will participate in an engaging debate on many of the cultural practices that harm women, especially concentrated in Africa. The World Health Organization has taken a firm stance against many of the practices in discussion, urging for action to prevent these actions on women.
As your chair, I expect you to bring your knowledge, ideas, and solutions to committee in order to allow us to have a proactive and engaging committee. I’m very excited to meet you all and hear what you have to say. If you have any questions, email me at [email protected]
See you soon!

Greetings, and welcome to MocoMUN 2015!
My name is Alina Gaynutdinova and this year I will chair this committee alongside the lovely Kate Garmer. We are extremely excited at this privilege to chair the very same event we were attending as delegates not last year. Currently I am a senior at Wootton High School and the Treasurer of our Model UN club. Outside of school and MUN I am also tech director of our school’s stage crew, as well as assistant producer for Wildwood Summer Theatre, a worker at Markoff’s Haunted Forest, an avid cat, TV, nature, and book enthusiast, and an all around hyper person (when I’m not busy napping to catch up on sleep throughout the day.)
Our committee, SOCHUM, stands for- Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural committee of the General Assembly. It is commonly referred to as the “Third Committee”. Its main objective is to promote world peace, human rights, and cultural development. As part of these objectives, SOCHUM also addresses issues pertaining to women’s rights, treatment of refugees, and social development issues involving the elderly, children, and people with disabilities.

I am thrilled to be your chair and promise to make sure we all have a grand time as long as everyone stays focused, intelligent, on task, and motivated through-out our journey together. Contact me through my email- [email protected] if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Cheers!
